About the test

To take the test, you need to attend a secure Pearson test centre, where you will use a computer a headset to answer all questions.

The test session takes 3 hours and consists of three main parts: speaking and writing (combined), reading and listening. There is an optional 10-minute break before the listening part. The test covers twenty different questions formats, from multiple choice to essay writing and interpreting information.

PTE Academic assesses practical knowledge of real-life, academic English using such source materials as lectures, charts and graphs. It takes into account different accents of the English language encountered in everyday life, so you will hear both native British and American speakers, as well as speakers for whom English is a foreign language.
